ERICA McCALMAN
Erica McCalman (She/Her) is an Independent Creative Producer with more than 15 years of contemporary and experimental Performing Arts practice working across Australia and internationally. She has produced for Sydney WorldPride, the Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM), Next Wave, Sydney Festival, Performance Space, Darwin Festival and others.
She is dedicated to facilitating arts outcomes which are rigorous, relevant, and reflective of the communities they serve. As an independent she has produced works presented in YIRRAMBOI festival (VIC), worked with GUTS Dance (NT), Vitalstatistix (SA), Hyphenated Projects (VIC) and as an oracle on Deborah Kelly’s (NSW) CREATION project. In 2019 she was the recipient of the Green Room Award for Innovation in Curation and Programming for Ritual - a series of 16 sunset events led by artists across Next Wave Festival 2018 (VIC). She has professional links with other independent producers globally, through her work with the Festival Academy (EU) and association with the Asian Producers’ Platform.
As a consultant and facilitator, she is an active advocate for a strong creative sector. Erica initiates online spaces for discourse around class, power dynamics between artists and institutions, re-framing what makes worthy art and why we make it and interrogating what a healthy, inclusive arts practice looks like holistically. She is a member of the Lived Experience Advisory Group for the Arts Wellbeing Collective and serves as the the chair of the board of Theatre Network Australia, the peak body for independent performing artists and arts workers. Her consultancy Art Oracle provides affordable mentorship and ad hoc producing solutions for independent artists.
Born and raised on Wurundjeri country in Narrm (Melbourne) Erica is a proud Ballardong Noongar woman with Irish Convict, Scottish and Cornish heritage. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (Production) from the Victorian College of the Arts. Her second favourite ‘F’ word is Festival.
